Your Mission: Bridge Science and Solution
As an Advanced Materials Application Engineer at 3M, you will be the critical technical link between our vast portfolio of core technologies (adhesives, coatings, films, filtration media, etc.) and the unmet needs of our industrial customers. You will not just support existing products; you will collaborate directly with customers to define problems, prototype novel solutions, and validate performance in real-world applications. Your work will accelerate the adoption of new 3M technologies and redefine what is possible in industries ranging from automotive and electronics to healthcare and renewable energy.
You will operate at the intersection of R&D, product development, and sales, utilizing state-of-the-art labs and fabrication tools to build, test, and iterate. This role is for a hands-on innovator who thrives on technical ambiguity and derives satisfaction from seeing a concept become a commercial reality.

-
Translate customer needs into actionable technical specifications and develop prototyping strategies using 3M’s material platforms.
-
Design and execute application-specific testing protocols to simulate end-use conditions and quantify performance advantages.
-
Create and present technical proposals, proof-of-concept demonstrations, and detailed test reports to both internal and external stakeholders.
2. Prototyping, Testing & Analysis
-
Operate and maintain advanced application lab equipment for coating, laminating, converting, and testing material assemblies.
-
Utilize a wide range of analytical and mechanical testing instruments (Instron, DMA, DSC, FTIR, optical microscopy) to characterize prototypes and failures.
-
Fabricate functional prototypes that demonstrate feasibility and performance for customer evaluation.
-
Collaborate with 3M’s corporate research labs to access leading-edge, pre-commercial technologies for application testing.
3. Technical Collaboration & Project Leadership
-
Lead cross-functional project teams involving scientists from R&D, manufacturing engineers, and marketing specialists to drive solution development.
-
Serve as the primary technical liaison between the customer and 3M’s internal organizations throughout the development cycle.
-
Document development processes, results, and learnings in internal systems to build institutional knowledge and enable future projects.
-
Contribute to intellectual property (IP) development by documenting novel applications and solutions.
4. Field Support & Commercialization
-
Support the scale-up of successful prototypes by working with process development engineers to ensure manufacturability.
-
Provide technical training and support to sales teams and channel partners on new applications and solutions.
-
Troubleshoot application issues in the field, performing root cause analysis and recommending design or material modifications.
