As a Senior Environmental Project Manager at AECOM, you will lead and deliver complex, multidisciplinary environmental projects for major infrastructure, energy, and development clients. You are the strategic leader and primary point of accountability, responsible for managing the triple constraints of scope, schedule, and budget while upholding the highest standards of technical quality, safety, and client satisfaction. Your projects will directly contribute to environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance, and the sustainable development of communities and economies.
You will manage a team of specialists, serve as the key client interface, and navigate the intricate technical and regulatory challenges inherent in large-scale projects. This role requires a blend of deep technical environmental expertise, commercial acumen, and exceptional leadership skills to guide projects from proposal through to successful completion.
Core Responsibilities & Deliverables
1. Project Leadership & Delivery

Lead the end-to-end delivery of medium to large-scale environmental projects, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), contaminated land remediation, permitting, compliance audits, and sustainability strategy projects.

Develop and manage project execution plans, defining scope, deliverables, schedules, budgets, and risk management strategies.

Ensure all project work is conducted in accordance with AECOM’s quality and safety management systems and relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., federal, state/provincial, and local regulations).

Serve as the primary technical and managerial point of contact for the client, building trusted relationships and ensuring clear communication.
2. Financial & Commercial Management
-
Hold full profit and loss (P&L) responsibility for your project portfolio, managing budgets typically ranging from $500K to $5M+.

Prepare proposals, cost estimates, and change orders.
-
Monitor project financial performance, analyze variances, and implement corrective actions to ensure profitability targets are met.

Manage subcontractors and vendor agreements.
3. Technical Excellence & Team Management

Provide technical direction and review for project teams, ensuring methodologies are sound and deliverables meet client and regulatory standards.

Mentor and develop junior and mid-level staff, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

Coordinate the work of multidisciplinary teams (e.g., ecologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, planners).

Author and review key technical reports and permit applications.
4. Business Development & Client Strategy

Identify and pursue new project opportunities with existing and new clients.

Contribute to the development of winning proposals and participate in client presentations and interviews.

Contribute to AECOM’s thought leadership in environmental services through presentations, papers, or participation in professional associations.

The Ideal Candidate: Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements
-
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, Ecology, or a related scientific field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Professional Certification: Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng/P.E.), Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo/P.G.), or equivalent home-country chartered status is highly preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in environmental consulting or a related industry.

Minimum of 5 years in a project management role, with demonstrated success in managing the full project lifecycle for environmental assessment or remediation projects.

Proven experience managing project financials, budgets, and teams.

Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge in one or more core areas:

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for linear infrastructure, energy, or mining.
-
Contaminated Site Investigation & Remediation (Phase I/II/III ESAs, RBP, risk assessment).
-
Environmental Permitting & Compliance (CWA, NEPA, CEAA, etc.).

Skills:

Expertise with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6) and financial tools.

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills for client and regulatory engagement.

Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Highly Valued Attributes

Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Experience working in multiple countries or jurisdictions.

Fluency in a second language relevant to a key office hub.

Established client relationships in a key market sector (transportation, oil & gas, mining, renewables).
