Your Mission: Optimize & Innovate

As a Refinery Process Engineer at ExxonMobil, you will be responsible for the technical stewardship and performance optimization of a designated process unit or area within one of our world-scale refineries or chemical plants. You are the technical authority for your assigned area, using data, engineering principles, and advanced tools to drive improvements in safety, reliability, energy efficiency, yield, and profitability. Your work bridges daily operations with long-term strategic planning, ensuring our facilities operate at their peak potential.

You will tackle challenges ranging from daily troubleshooting to leading major capital project scoping. This role is the cornerstone of our manufacturing technical hierarchy, offering a clear pathway for career growth into operations supervision, advanced engineering, or project management within a truly global company.

Core Responsibilities & Technical Focus Areas

1. Process Unit Performance & Optimization

  • Monitor and analyze real-time process data using advanced process monitoring software to identify optimization opportunities and operational deviations.

  • Conduct daily technical surveillance of your assigned unit(s), ensuring operation within defined safety and environmental limits.

  • Develop and implement process improvement plans to increase yield, improve product quality, reduce energy consumption, and minimize flaring/emissions.

  • Perform engineering calculations (heat and material balances, hydraulics, equipment sizing) to validate performance and support modification proposals.

2. Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Serve as the first point of contact for complex operational issues, providing real-time engineering support to console operators and field technicians.

  • Lead or participate in root cause failure analyses (RCFA) for process upsets, equipment failures, or quality incidents.

  • Develop operating guidelines and procedure updates to incorporate lessons learned and new best practices.

  • Support turnaround and shutdown planning by identifying critical inspections, catalyst changeout strategies, and equipment cleaning requirements.

3. Safety, Reliability & Environmental Stewardship

  • Champion Process Safety Management (PSM) elements for your area, including participation in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Management of Change (MOC) reviews, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).

  • Ensure compliance with all environmental permits (air, water, waste) through monitoring, reporting, and implementing control strategies.

  • Analyze equipment performance trends to predict failures and recommend preventive maintenance strategies that enhance reliability.

  • Conduct risk assessments for proposed operational changes or temporary deviations.

4. Project Development & Economic Analysis

  • Develop scopes and justification for capital projects, from small reliability improvements to multi-million dollar efficiency upgrades.

  • Create conceptual designs and collaborate with project engineers to develop detailed engineering packages.

  • Perform economic evaluations (NPV, IRR) to prioritize improvement opportunities and justify capital expenditures.

  • Provide process engineering input during project commissioning and startup.

5. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing

  • Document and share technical knowledge within the global ExxonMobil engineering community.

  • Mentor new engineers and co-op students.

  • Participate in global engineering networks to leverage best practices from other sites.
