Your Core Responsibilities: The Engineer’s Role

As a CPKC Locomotive Engineer, you will be entrusted with the safe conduction of trains across diverse territories. Your primary duty is the safe movement of people, equipment, and freight. Key responsibilities include:

• Train Operation & Control: Safely operate locomotives to transport freight and ensure the proper handling of trains under all conditions, including varying weather, terrain, and traffic.

• Absolute Rule Adherence: Strictly interpret and comply with operating rules, timetable instructions, bulletins, and federal regulations (Transport Canada, FRA, or SCT).

• Precision Communication: Maintain constant, clear communication via radio with dispatchers, conductors, and other train crews using standardized rail terminology.

• Mechanical Systems Expertise: Conduct pre-trip inspections of locomotives, identifying and reporting any mechanical defects or issues to ensure equipment is in optimal working order.

• Consist Management: Understand train consists, tonnage, and horsepower calculations to effectively handle the train over the subdivision.

• Safety Leadership: Champion a culture of safety by following all procedures, participating in safety briefings, and immediately reporting any safety concerns or incidents.

• Documentation & Reporting: Accurately complete all required documentation, including train orders, delay reports, and logbooks.

• Emergency Response: Be prepared to take decisive, rule-based action in the event of an emergency, mechanical failure, or track obstruction to protect life, property, and the environment.

A Day in the Life on the CPKC Network

Your schedule will follow the essential, 24/7 nature of railroading. While no two days are identical, a typical assignment may involve:

1. Call Time: Receiving your call to duty, often with a set period to report for work.

2. Job Briefing & Review: Meeting with your Conductor to review the train consist, bulletins, and any special instructions from the dispatcher.

3. Pre-Trip Inspection: Performing a thorough walk-around inspection (air brake test, checking fluids, lights, couplers) on your assigned locomotive consist.

4. Train Handling: Operating the train over your assigned subdivision, constantly monitoring signals, track conditions, speed, and air brake pressure.

5. Communication & Coordination: Interacting with dispatchers for authority updates, coordinating meets with other trains, and communicating with roadway workers.

6. On-Duty Management: Managing your hours of service in compliance with federal regulations, which will include periods of rest away from your home terminal.

7. Post-Trip Duties: Completing final reports, debriefing if necessary, and preparing for your required rest period.

Required Qualifications: What You Need to Succeed

This is a federally regulated, safety-critical position with non-negotiable requirements.

Mandatory Certifications & Licenses (Country Specific):

• For Canadian Operations: A valid Locomotive Engineer Certificate issued by Transport Canada.

• For U.S. Operations: A valid Locomotive Engineer License issued by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

• For Mexican Operations: The required operational license and certifications as mandated by the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT).

• Global Requirement: A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a passport for potential cross-border operations.

Essential Skills & Experience:

• Proven Experience: Demonstrated experience as a qualified locomotive engineer, or substantial prior experience as a conductor with the requisite training to obtain engineer certification.

• Rulebook Proficiency: In-depth knowledge and proven ability to apply the CROR (Canadian Rail Operating Rules), GCOR (General Code of Operating Rules), or Mexican operating rules as applicable.

• Safety-First Mindset: An impeccable safety record and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks.

• Mental Fortitude & Focus: Exceptional concentration, situational awareness, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure and during extended periods of vigilance.

• Physical Capability: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions, including climbing ladders, coupling air hoses, and walking on uneven ballast.

• Lifestyle Adaptability: Availability to work irregular hours, nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating schedule, with extended periods away from home. This includes being available for calls 24/7 within the framework of hours-of-service laws.

Highly Valued Attributes:

• Experience operating on CPKC subdivisions or previous Class I railroad experience.

• Familiarity with Distributed Power (DP) operations and intermodal or hazardous materials train handling.

• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
