Join the Culinary Foundation of a Global Food Capital

A steady and significant demand exists for diligent, reliable, and team-oriented individuals to support the bustling culinary operations across Singapore’s diverse food and beverage sector. We are recruiting for Kitchen Helper positions in hotels, restaurants, catering companies, food courts, and institutional kitchens. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to work hard, learn fundamental kitchen operations, and contribute to the smooth running of a fast-paced food service environment. For eligible international candidates, these positions may offer employment under Singapore’s Work Permit scheme for the services sector, subject to source country quotas, levy requirements, and employer sponsorship.

This position is the essential backbone of any professional kitchen. Kitchen Helpers ensure chefs and cooks can focus on cooking by maintaining impeccable cleanliness, preparing basic ingredients, and handling the vital but often unseen tasks that keep service flowing smoothly. It is an entry point into Singapore’s world-renowned culinary scene, offering a structured environment to build foundational skills.

Detailed Position Overview

Core Sectors & Role Focus

Kitchen Helper opportunities are abundant across Singapore’s multi-layered F&B landscape. We are actively placing candidates in the following settings:

  • Hotel Kitchens: Large-scale operations in 4- and 5-star hotels, supporting multiple restaurants, banquets, and room service. Roles are highly structured with clear standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Restaurants & Cafés: From high-end fine dining to busy casual eateries and popular café chains. The pace and specific duties can vary greatly depending on the cuisine and service style.

  • Central Kitchens & Catering: Facilities that produce food for airline meals, event catering, or multiple retail outlets. Work often involves assembly-line style preparation and strict hygiene protocols for bulk production.

  • Food Courts & Hawker Centres: Fast-paced environments supporting individual stalls or larger food court operators, focusing on high-volume, quick-turnaround tasks.

  • Institutional Catering: Kitchens in schools, corporate offices, or hospitals, where consistency, hygiene, and large-batch preparation are key.

General Responsibilities & Daily Tasks

The core duties of a Kitchen Helper are centered on support, cleanliness, and basic preparation. Your daily tasks will typically include:

  • Cleaning & Sanitization: Performing thorough cleaning of all kitchen areas, including floors, walls, worktables, and equipment. Washing, sanitizing, and drying cooking pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen tools. Ensuring garbage and recycling are disposed of promptly and correctly.

  • Basic Food Preparation (“Mise en Place”): Washing, peeling, chopping, and slicing vegetables, fruits, and herbs as directed. Weighing and measuring basic ingredients. Preparing simple items like salads, cold appetizers, or garnishes under supervision.

  • Dishwashing & Pot-Washing: Operating commercial dishwashing machines or manually washing dishes during peak service. Ensuring a constant supply of clean plates, glasses, and cutlery for service.

  • Receiving & Storage: Assisting with receiving food deliveries, checking quantities, and transporting items to appropriate storage areas (dry store, chillers, freezers). Ensuring the kitchen store rooms are tidy and organized.

  • Equipment & Area Setup/Breakdown: Helping to set up workstations before service and breaking them down afterwards. Assisting in basic equipment assembly and ensuring work areas are ready for the next shift.

  • Support During Service: Fetching ingredients from storage for cooks, clearing used utensils and containers from workstations, and generally assisting the culinary team to maintain workflow during busy meal periods.

  • Adherence to Safety Standards: Following strict Singapore Food Agency (SFA) guidelines on food safety and hygiene. This includes proper personal hygiene, correct use of cleaning chemicals, and understanding basic temperature control.

Essential Qualifications & Candidate Profile

We seek motivated individuals with a strong work ethic and a willingness to follow instructions precisely. The ideal candidate possesses:

  • Physical Fitness & Stamina: This is a physically demanding role requiring the ability to stand for long hours, lift moderate loads (e.g., sacks of vegetables, cases of canned goods), and work in a hot, humid, and fast-paced environment.

  • Reliability & Punctuality: Consistent attendance and timeliness are critical in a team-based kitchen environment where others depend on you.

  • Teamwork & Attitude: Ability to work cooperatively as part of a diverse, multicultural team. A positive attitude and willingness to take on various tasks are highly valued.

  • No Formal Experience Required: This is an entry-level position. No prior professional culinary experience or specific educational qualifications are typically required. A keen interest in food and a desire to learn are more important.

  • Language Skills: Basic understanding of English is highly beneficial for following instructions and ensuring safety. Knowledge of Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil can also be an advantage depending on the kitchen’s primary language.

Singapore offers a unique, disciplined, and efficient work environment with opportunities for those starting their F&B career.

The Singapore F&B Sector Advantage

  • Structured & Safe Work Environment: Singapore has exceptionally high standards for workplace safety and food hygiene, providing a clean and orderly framework for work.

  • Gateway to Culinary Skills: For those interested in a cooking career, this role provides a direct opportunity to observe chefs, learn basic techniques, and potentially be promoted to Commis Cook or other junior cooking positions over time.

  • Competitive Remuneration for Entry-Level: Wages are structured and typically higher than in many other regional countries for similar roles.

    • Basic Monthly Salary: Typically ranges from SGD $1,400 to $1,800 for entry-level helpers.

    • Overtime Pay: Provided for work beyond standard hours, which is common in the industry.

    • Employer CPF Contributions: For Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. For foreign Work Permit holders, the employer pays a monthly levy.

    • Meals on Duty: Most employers provide at least one meal per shift.

  • Cultural Experience: Work in a truly international city with a legendary food culture, exposing you to a wide variety of cuisines and practices.

Work Permit Scheme for Foreign Kitchen Helpers

For international candidates, employment is governed by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) Work Permit scheme.

  1. Eligibility: The Work Permit for the services sector is typically for nationals from approved source countries (e.g., Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines). There are sector-specific quotas and levies.

  2. Employer Sponsorship: A Singapore-registered company (the employer) must apply for the Work Permit on your behalf. You cannot apply for it yourself.

  3. Requirements: You must pass a medical examination and may need to meet other criteria set by MOM. The employer is responsible for the security bond and monthly foreign worker levy.

  4. No Dependants: Work Permit holders in the services sector are generally not allowed to bring family members to Singapore.

Application Process & Requirements

Step-by-Step Hiring Journey

  1. Job Offer & Application Initiation: A Singapore employer identifies and selects a candidate, often through an agency in the source country or direct application.

  2. Work Permit Application: The employer submits the online Work Permit application to MOM with the required documents, including your personal details and the In-Principle Approval (IPA) of your accommodation.

  3. Approval & Arrival: Upon MOM’s approval, you will receive the Work Permit In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter. You then travel to Singapore to complete the issuance of the Work Permit card and begin medical check-ups if not done in your home country.

  4. Onboarding & Safety Training: You will undergo company-specific onboarding, which includes mandatory SFA Food Hygiene Course (Basic) training, kitchen safety briefings, and orientation to your specific duties.

Key Considerations for Applicants

  • Agency Fees: Be extremely cautious of excessive recruitment agency fees. Singapore law dictates that employers should bear the costs of recruitment. Always verify the credibility of any agency.

  • Contract Review: Ensure you fully understand the terms of your employment contract before signing, including salary, working hours, overtime rates, and deductions (if any for accommodation, etc.).

  • Accommodation: Employers are required to provide and pay for acceptable accommodation, which is stipulated in the Work Permit conditions.
