An Introduction to Humanitarian Sector Careers

The global displacement crisis requires a dedicated, professional, and compassionate response from the international community. The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is at the forefront of this effort, providing protection and promoting durable solutions for refugees and displaced people worldwide. For individuals seeking to launch a meaningful career where their work has a direct impact on the lives of others, our “Multiple Entry-Level Jobs” initiative represents a structured pathway into the humanitarian sector. This is an invitation to begin your professional journey with a globally recognized organization, turning dedication into tangible action.

These positions are specifically designed for those at the outset of their careers. We are looking for candidates who bring fresh perspectives, a strong willingness to learn, and a deep-seated commitment to human rights. If you possess resilience, cultural sensitivity, and a desire to contribute to our mission, these roles offer the foundational experience and professional development opportunities necessary to build a lasting career in the humanitarian field. This is more than a job; it is an opportunity to gain a profound understanding of global displacement while developing highly transferable skills in project support, logistics, administration, and community engagement.

Deconstructing the Roles: Purpose and Impact

The core purpose of these entry-level positions is to provide essential operational and programmatic support to DRC’s country and field offices. As a new team member, you will be integrated into the day-to-day activities that allow our life-saving programs to function effectively, from protection and camp management to livelihood support and emergency response.

Your work, though at an entry level, will have a direct and tangible impact on our mission. The key outcomes of these roles are multifaceted:

  • Direct Program Support: Your administrative, logistical, and coordination efforts will enable our senior staff to focus on strategic program delivery, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most, efficiently and effectively.

  • Community Liaison: In many roles, you will act as a vital link between DRC and the communities we serve, helping to ensure our interventions are culturally appropriate and responsive to local needs.

  • Organizational Capacity Building: You will be part of the backbone of our field operations, contributing to the smooth running of offices, the management of data, and the coordination of activities.

  • Foundation for Humanitarian Leadership: This experience is the first critical step in a career path that can lead to future roles as a Protection Officer, Program Coordinator, Logistics Specialist, or Field Manager.

A Day in the Life: Potential Roles and Key Responsibilities

  • Providing essential administrative support to the program team, including organizing meetings, preparing reports, and managing program-related documents.

  • Assisting in data collection and entry for monitoring and evaluation activities, helping to track the progress and impact of our projects.

  • Supporting the coordination of workshops, trainings, and distributions for beneficiary communities.

  • Acting as an interpreter or translator if you possess relevant language skills.

As a Logistics & Procurement Assistant, your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting the procurement process by collecting quotations, preparing purchase orders, and maintaining supplier records.

  • Assisting in the management of warehouse and inventory, ensuring accurate records of supplies and equipment.

  • Helping to organize the transportation of goods and personnel to and from field sites.

  • Maintaining asset registers and supporting the maintenance of DRC facilities and equipment.

As a Finance Assistant, your responsibilities may include:

  • Processing payments and advances in accordance with DRC’s financial rules and procedures.

  • Managing petty cash and ensuring all transactions are properly documented.

  • Assisting in the preparation of monthly financial reports and supporting documents for audits.

  • Verifying invoices and supporting the budget monitoring process.
